"Impact Printer" Squid Farm

The impact printer was Chibi's first attempt to create an academic publishing house on the server. It was theorized that by dropping squid onto a pixel grid, in a controlled fashion, it would be possible to create an impact printer in Minecraft. The problems with this approach are twofold:

  1. Due to the extreme demand for paper products in nearby Aransas, there isn't enough paper in the world to sustain a press this size.
  2. Squid are feisty, free-spirited creatures which refuse to fall to their certain demise in a controlled fashion.

Nonetheless, a set of drains and pipes collect the remains of the squid, processing them into ink which can be obtained by the barrel.

Directions

Head on over to the Scrapped Metal iron farm at Idle Hands. From the Nether portal, take the first right. Follow the signs to reach the collection room. Ink sac and uncooked salmon accumulate automatically in a chest.

The squid won't spawn when you're down in the collection room, however: that is too close. In order for the farm to work, you need to stand upstairs, in the iron farm's collection room. You might as well pick up some iron while you're at it. The throughput of the squid farm is dictated mostly by the number of other players on the server and whether or not they have beach-front property. Other players who are near rivers and/or oceans will cause squid to spawn elsewhere, decreasing the throughput of the farm to almost nothing.

History

The first squid farm was constructed by Chibi and Trigonography. After the Update Aquatic, it was discovered that squids no longer spawned within its borders.

In February 2019, the old farm was decommissioned and gutted. A new version of the farm was installed in a nearby river, which was then drained to limit the available spawning space. With help from ManaLocke, a series of timed dispensers were installed. The dispensers periodically flush all the water from the spawning tankā€¦ sending any unfortunate swimmers to meet their doom. Or, at least, the floor.
